Project Description
The main objective of the Bodoland Pig Mission is to transform traditional livelihood into sustainable economic activity, generating 1 lakh kg of pork per day by the fifth year, production of 1700 quality piglets per day and 3 lakh pigs to be made available on any day.
The initiative aims to transform the traditional means of livelihood of thousands of households into a sustainable economic activity. A target of producing 1-lakh kg pork per day has been set under the mission, which will directly involve 30,000 households in breeding/rearing activities. “The Bodoland Pig Mission is a new initiative for farmers to make the BTR a piggery hub. The mission was initiated by the BTR administration to create awareness on self-reliant livelihood in the region,” the minister said, adding that the mission will make Assam self-sufficient in piggery. Bora said the goal is to foray into the markets of the Northeast and that of the neighbouring nations. Pig-breeding facilities, supply of quality feed at competitive prices, veterinary services, skill enhancement and registration of farmers, livestock identification and insurance facility, value chain development and market linkage will be provided under the mission across the BTR. Pork accounts for 38.5 per cent of total meat consumption in Assam. It is an important source of income for more than 10 lakh households and 2,500 commercial entrepreneurs in the state. It is estimated that 1,94,000 tonnes of pork are sold in Assam annually, while the value of the pork market is Rs 582 crore, as per the state government data.
